Hi Shai,

I am an avid magazine reader. I have a degree in Marketing and Media Management, with journalism as one of the modules.

I would like to write for fashion magazines like Elle, Cleo, Her World, etc. My interests lies in beauty, health and cooking.

What’s your advice for a person like me? I would love to work with a magazine team. It would be a dream come true!!!

One of the first steps to reach your goal is to know what you want to do. You already have that one covered.

The next step is to make your goals more specific. The magazines you mentioned

are all women’s magazines. Target the first publication you wish to query and study it as best as you can. Know t he type of articles they publish, the kind of ads they run, etc. Try to limit your focus to one or two publications at first. Just move on to the others when you start feeling more confident or if the first ones you queried didn’t work out.

Make your topics more specific as well. Beauty, health, and food are all very broad subjects. What do you REALLY want to write about? What are you strengths and resources?

Since you have a marketing and media management as a background, you might want to use these as your starting point. Why not tackle business and career issues first, with a slant towards your target audience (women)?

Also, are you looking in to becoming a permanent staff of a magazine or a freelance contributor? Either way, make a career map for yourself on steps you need to take to achieve your goal.

Enroll in writing classes (both online and/or in ‘real life’), or even hire a writing coach/editor if you like, if you feel the need for more guidance. There are also LOADS of references and resources out there for you to peruse.
